The Foundation hosts three events each year which Scholars are required to attend.  At the beginning of each academic year, the Foundation holds an orientation session at each of the universities, where freshmen receive valuable information about the Terry program.  At the same meeting, present and former students, as well as educational professionals, discuss development of effective study skills to help a student make the most of the educational opportunity offered by the Foundation.

In addition to the orientation, the Foundation sponsors a dinner in the fall at each university that is attended by the Directors and special invited guests.

In the spring, usually on the last Sunday in April, all of the Scholars from each university travel by bus or van to relax and visit in a more informal setting at a picnic held in Round Top, Texas, at the Winedale Historical Center, where the accomplishments of the graduating seniors are recognized.

Because of the large number of Terry Scholars and Scholar alumni attending the spring picnic and other Scholar functions, we are unable to honor requests to permit family members, dates, or friends of Scholars to attend.  It is also our hope and intention that Scholars will spend their time at these functions getting to better know each other and the Foundation’s staff and Directors, which would be more difficult if guests from outside the program were present.

Scholars are reminded to show professional respect to program speakersLaptops, iPads, or other similar devices are not allowed at Foundation events.  Do not study or do other homework during Foundation events.  Similarly, do not text or use PDA’s during the event program and limit any non-emergent texting or phone use in order to concentrate on in-person interaction with other Scholars physically present.

Your attendance at each of these functions is mandatory.  The dates for each of these three events are published well in advance and are always available in the “calendar” portion of the Foundation web site at www.terryfoundation.org.  Unexcused failure to attend any of these functions will jeopardize continuation of your scholarship.
